On the slopes at Big White
Ski & Snowboard Instructor Course Resort Guide
Snowfall
At Big White, it just doesn’t seem to stop snowing! Many a SnowSkool student has made the error of leaving an article of clothing on the porch, next to the hot-tub only to find it is buried under 30cm of fresh snow in the morning! The snow at Big White is what is commonly known as “Champagne Powder”. It has the lowest water content of any snowfall in Canada – perfect for skiing or snowboarding, but not at all good for a snowball fight! And, with 27 feet of the lightest, fluffiest snowflakes falling between early December and late March, a powder day really is never far away! You really will notice the difference in the quality (and quantity) of the snow in Big White compared to almost any other resort in the world!
Terrain
With almost 3000 acres of skiable terrain, Big White is British Columbia’s second-largest ski resort. With 118 runs in five powder bowls, the terrain is renowned for its diversity and is the perfect setting for a ski instructor or snowboard instructor training course. Long, cruisey green and blue runs provide the perfect terrain for perfecting drills on your skis or snowboard, ample tree coverage means that you can practice your tree-skiing – which is probably Canada’s best – the Cliff is where you cut your teeth off-piste and, for those of an adventurous nature, the Ski & Snowboard Terrain Park has enough rails, kickers, spines, hips and table tops to satisfy the bravest skiers and snowboarders.
The best thing about it though is that it is right in your backyard…ski down the road to your house, or to the shops – the main street through the village is a pisted ski run!
The Ski & Board School
The Ski & Board School at Big White Ski Resort is the last word in professionalism. It is a hugely progressive school that has employed twenty-five former SnowSkool graduates to work as ski instructors or snowboard instructors in the past two years. You will receive five hours of lessons, five days per week from some of CanadaR17;s most experienced and most qualified ski instructors and snowboard instructors. SnowSkool’s ski and snowboard instructors will use the latest video-analysis techniques to help improve your skiing or snowboarding and, once per week, you will receive a full and comprehensive, personalised feedback on your progress from your ski instructor or snowboard instructor.
“SnowSkool students will develop their skiing and riding skills with a number of different ski and snowboard instructors who are all working towards the same end: i.e. making every individual into a ski or snowboard instructor at the conclusion of their gap year ski or snowboard programme.”
Josh Foster, Director of Snowsports, Big White Ski Resort.
