Whilst filming LOTRs in New Zealand, it is reported that Gandalf the Grey (all mountain skier) and Gimli the Dwarf (freestyle snowboarder) chose to ski/ ride Treble Cone on their days off...and so who is SnowSkool to argue the wisdom of the great wizard and his short-ass sidekick?!? TC (Treble Cone) may not enjoy the commercial success of other ski hills in New Zealand but it is firmly established as the local’s favourite. The scenery is the first thing that will hit you when you arrive at the base-area; Lake Wanaka acts as a stunning backdrop with the mountains of the Southern Alps rising straight out of the clear-blue water. It is a steep hill too that will challenge your skiing/ riding...the terrain breakdown is 10% beginner: 45% intermediate: 45% expert. Regular powder days too will enable you to confront conditions sufficient to push you harder and harder. The SnowSkool ski instructor course and snowboard instructor course in New Zealand is a tough programme and you will need the terrain and snow conditions to ensure that you hit the levels required to continue our awesome success rate.
There are snow-making facilities at TC but they are not often utilised as the resort’s south-facing aspect and high altitude ensures reliable, natural snowfall from late June to early October. Historically, TC enjoys more powder days than any other ski hill in New Zealand and has arguably the best quality and quantity of snowfall in the country. Conversely, the town of Wanaka is rarely snowed-in and so even though you can be skiing/ riding powder up at TC, the conditions are a lot more favourable down in the town centre where mild temperatures and blue-sky days are the norm.
Make no mistake, Treble Cone offers a big mountain experience: 45% is classed as expert terrain, 45% is classed as intermediate terrain and only 10% is classed as beginner terrain. It is the South Island’s largest ski area with a ski area stretching to 1350 acres. The terrain is spread into two main basins: Home Basin and Saddle Basin which offer something for everyone with a variety of green, blue and black runs. The primary parts of the training for your ski instructor course or snowboard instructor course will take place in these two basins. In terms of pushing your skiing/ riding to new and higher levels, there are two peripheral basins - the Matukituki Basin and the super-scary Motatapu Basin – that play host to some sick double-black diamond chutes, bowls, gullies and natural half-pipes. The off-piste and freeriding terrain at TC is legendary. On top of that, the terrain park at TC offers a range of freestyle features from flat boxes for beginners to huge 50ft+ booters for TC’s core freeride customer.
At Treble Cone, SnowSkool works with an international team of some of the most highly-qualified ski instructors and snowboard instructors that this planet has to offer. Amongst our group of ski and snowboard legends are Ski & Board School Directors from the northern hemisphere, the former Chief Exec of BASI and international demonstration team members from NZ, Canada and elsewhere. You will struggle to find a more qualified and dedicated team of instructors anywhere in the world.
