Ski & Snowboard Instructor Qualifications in New Zealand
Since 1971, the New Zealand Snowsport Instructors' Alliance ( NZSIA ) has been established to train, examine and certify instructors and coaches to an internationally recognised standard, as set out by the International Ski Instructors' Alliance ( ISIA ). And in this time, her instructors have developed a global reputation for a very high standard of professionalism.
Certificate of Ski Instructors (CSI)
No, it does not always stand for Crime Scene Investigation, the CSI is also a four-day entry level qualification that is a pre-requisite of the NZSIA Stage One Instructor qualification! Candidates should be advanced parallel skiers using a pole touch and able to ski comfortably on all groomed terrain including some easy off-piste. From a teaching perspective, you will be able to teach adults and children from first time to wedge turning and display an understanding of the teaching model and an ability to analyse skiers of these levels.

NZSIA Stage One
The Stage One is a 8 day course/exam for those who want to pursue a career in the snowsports industry. It allows successful candidates to teach skiers up to advanced-intermediate level. Ski improvement is an important part of this exam and successful candidates will be able to ski to an advanced level: dynamically on & off piste and perform a basic short turn. Course content includes teaching from wedge turning to advanced parallel turns with a pole plant. Again a thorough understanding the teaching model and the learning process is necessary as well as an analysis of skiers at this level and class organisation & handling.

Candidates riding ability is monitored during the entire four day course and you must be able to ride all groomed blue runs in control and with a good blend of movements. Also candidates must perform a tidy, skidded turn on a green run. The teaching aspect of the programme is examined on the fourth day in an individual 15 minute lesson demonstration. A sound understanding of the teaching model and analysis of beginner to intermediate riders is required.

NZSIA Stage One
For snowboarders, the Stage One is a 5 day course/exam for those who want to pursue a career in the snowsports industry. It allows successful candidates to teach riders up to advanced-intermediate level. Riding-wise, all candidates will demonstrate an ability to ride all blue groomed and off piste terrain with good form as well as tidy skidded and edged demonstrations on piste. There are also many freestyle elements: switch riding on green terrain, straight air, ollie, nose roll and 180 that need to be displayed. Candidates' teaching is assessed on the final day during a 30 minute teaching presentation to other members of their group and examiners will focus on understanding of the teaching model and learning progression, movement analysis and class handling.
