Snowboard Instructor Qualifications in Canada

If you want to train to become a snowboard instructor in Canada, you need to ride and teach according to the standards set down by CASI (Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors). SnowSkool snowboard courses in Canada take place in Banff and Big White both offer training up to Level 2 standard. CASI is a member of ISIA (the International Snowboard Instructors Alliance) and, as such, CASI instructors are entitled to work as snowboard instructors throughout the world, subject to achieving certain levels.

CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor

It’s not all about the riding in this three-day exam but that will get you halfway there! Candidates must show that they can plan and organise a snowboard lesson for beginner to early-intermediate snowboarders. Snowboarding-wise, you must be able to ride with good technique, speed and control on intermediate terrain.

CASI Level 2 Snowboard Instructor

Now we’re talking...! The four-day CASI Level 2 is a sizeable step-up from the entry level first qualification and so successful candidates will have to display consistent effort and dedication throughout the course of snowboard instructor training. You will show an ability to snowboard in tougher terrain – moguls, crud and the freestyle park – as well as advanced carving turns. In terms of teaching, you will have to be able to teach switch riding, intermediate carving and advanced sliding turns.

"I had a blast on SnowSkool back in 2007 and was stoked to get a job back at Big White 2007/08…strange to think I have now done five seasons there! I passed my 3 in 2008/09 and the plan is to get another couple of season under my belt, hopefully start teaching some of the prep weeks of the SnowSkool programme in Big White and then go for Level 4 in 2012/13."
